Following the success at Euston Station, where the project was originally conceived to take place, Empacity (info on the project here) was run again as a pop-up installation and interactive experience on two other occasions. We took on board new members to the team of collaborators, and designed & built a brand new installation piece using CNC fabrication technology.
The revisited design of Empacity installation consists of a piece of urban furniture that enables the fictitious “Hair & Tales” salon to take place. While the principle of a mirror that pivots to become a table remains the same, the design of the piece was refined. A bespoke pattern was created inspired on antique salon equipment, which was then cut out creating a delicate trellis effect on the side panels. Additionally, the piece was designed with CNC joints to easily enable its storage and reassembly, thus creating a truly mobile unit that can be used again in different settings.
We had the pleasure to be exhibited during the 2017 Degree Show of Central Saint Martins, as part of the MA Narrative Environments graduate projects. The new display was complemented by a storyboard and exhibition book, which guided the visitor through the experience. For the opening ceremony though, visitors were able to take part in the live experience of our pop-up hair salon, and get a fantastic hairdo while sharing their stories in a convivial environment.
Subsequently we were featured as part of London Design Festival 2017 at the exhibition Spaces of Tomorrow: Shared Spaces – collaboration between CSM and Copenhagen-based studio Space 10. Considering our increasingly crowded urban settings, in this exhibition we explored how to meet the demands and create new shared spaces in the future. Empacity was also highlighted as one of the evening talks alongside other boundary-pushing projects.
